Description

A LARGE IRON VAJRA, TIBET, 15TH-17TH CENTURY

Heavily cast, the six-pronged vajra with a central compressed globular knob in the form of an endless knot, flanked by bands of lotus petals in relief and beaded edges, issuing a central column surrounded by arched vajra points emerging from the jaws of stylized makara heads and terminating in pointed finials.

Provenance: A private collection in the Netherlands.
Condition: Very good condition with expected wear from centuries of handling and worship, casting irregularities, small areas of corrosion, minor nicks and small dents here and there, occasional light scratches.

Weight: 885 g
Dimensions: Length 24.5 cm

The vajra (Tibetan: dorje), a symbol of indestructibility and power, is one of the primary ritual symbols in Tibetan Buddhism. Derived from Sanskrit and translating to both thunderbolt and diamond, the vajra consists of two sets of prongs from which lotus petals emanate, flanking a central sphere. Often used in combination with a bell, which represents feminine wisdom, the vajra symbolizes the masculine attribute of skillful means or compassion.
