Description

TWO GILT-BRONZE FIGURES OF MAHASIDDHAS, TIBET, 18TH CENTURY

The two mahasiddhas each finely cast and incised, both seated on a domed kapala cover made from gilt-copper repoussé and decorated with scrolls on a wavely ground. Both are seated in a relaxed pose with one hand raised hand in abhaya mudra, dressed in a dhoti and richly adorned in beaded jewelry, their faces with grim expressions, the male figure with a billowing sash and the hair arranged in a high chignon topped by a jewel, the female deity wearing a foliate tiara. (2)

Inscriptions: The repoussé covers inscribed in Tibetan, ‘left 4’ and ‘left 5’.

Provenance: French trade. Acquired from an old private estate in northern France.
Condition: Good condition with old wear, traces of use, the patina smoothened through centuries of worship to a coppery warm color. Small dents and losses, few nicks, minor surface scratches, and casting flaws.

Weight: 200.7 g and 224.5 g
Dimensions: Height 8.5 cm and 9.9 cm
