Description

A SMALL BRONZE FIGURE OF VAJRAPANI, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Tibetan-Chinese. Finely cast, the deity strides powerfully in alidhasana, his raised right hand holding a vajra while the left is held at the chest in karana mudra. He wears a tiger pelt around his waist and is decorated with jewelry formed of coiled snakes along with a beaded necklace. His face bears a fierce, wrathful expression with wide, piercing eyes, arched brows, and a prominent urna. His flaming red hair is neatly incised, radiating upward, behind the skull tiara.

Condition: Good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, metal fills inherent to the manufacture, remnants of gilt and pigment, scattered tiny nicks, scratches to back, the bronze with a fine dark patina.

With a modern copper stand of flat rectangular form covered at the top with purple velvet and pierced with two apertures to hold the pegs fitted below the deity’s feet. (2)
