Description

A GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF SHADBHUJA MAHAKALA, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Tibetan-Chinese. Finely cast, the three-headed six-armed deity striding in alidhasana, his hands held in karana mudra with the main two holding a vajra and ghanta and the remaining radiating around him. He wears a tiger skin around his waist and is adorned with intricately beaded jewelry. Each of his three faces displays a wrathful expression with wide piercing eyes and thick furrowed brows, their mouths open with clenched teeth. His flaming red hair rises dramatically, crowned with a diadem of skulls.

Provenance: From an Austrian private collection. The base with an old label inscribed ‘10’.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, a minor loss to the hair in the back, rubbing to gilt mostly to the back, scattered small nicks and light surface scratches, remnants of pigment.

Weight: 168.5 g (excl. stand) and 215.3 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 8.2 cm (the figure) and 9 cm (incl. stand)

With a modern copper stand of flat rectangular form covered at the top with purple velvet and pierced with two apertures to hold the pegs fitted below the deity’s feet. (2)

The protector deity Mahakala is a wrathful form of the primordial Vajradhara, the supreme essence of all Buddhas. He can be two-armed, four-armed or six-armed as in the present lot. In his six-armed form he is also considered as a fierce and powerful manifestation of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion.

Mahakala's fearsome appearance
and the terrifying implements that he holds display his capability to cope with our persistent and unwanted negativities. His most distinctive symbolic attributes are the chopper (kartri) and the skull bowl (kapala) filled with blood, symbolizing the sharp edge of wisdom shredding all materialistic negative attitudes in the human-skull bowl of emptiness that holds the blood of defeated evil and demonic elements.
