Description

AN AMUSING BRONZE GROUP OF A MONKEY RIDING A CAMEL, LATE QING DYNASTY TO REPUBLIC PERIOD

Expert’s note: The present lot represents the idea that cleverness (monkey) and perseverance (camel) lead to prosperity (ingot), a concept deeply tied to Chinese cultural values and commerce. This bronze possibly once served as an auspicious object for entrepreneurs seeking fortune and success.

China, 19th – first half of 20th century. Modeled as a youthful Bactrian camel with a whimsical monkey as its rider. The ape is seated on a blanket between the camel’s humps, holding an ingot in his hands.

Provenance
: New York trade.
Condition: Good condition with traces of wear, manufacturing flaws, and some small nicks and abrasions. Attractive chocolate-brown patina overall.

Weight: 948.5 g
Dimensions: Height 15 cm

Camels played a crucial part
in the long-distance trade along the Silk Road during the Tang dynasty. Camels were treasured for their reliability and capability of crossing the two main deserts, Gobi and Tarim, and were specially bred in China on the grasslands of present-day Shanxi and Gansu provinces. Even though camels were not native to China, they became a common sight in the Tang capital Chang'an and large cities such as Luoyang.
