Description

A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, MING DYNASTY

China, 1368-1644. Seated in dhyanasana, the right hand lowered in bhumisparsha mudra and the left held above the lap in vitarka mudra, dressed in loosely draped robes with bow-tied undergarment, decorated with neatly incised foliate hems, the bared chest with a wan emblem incised to center. The serene face with heavy-lidded eyes below gently arched brows, his full lips forming a calm smile, and flanked by elongated earlobes. The hair arranged in tight snail-shell curls surrounding the ushnisha.

Provenance: From a private collection in the United Kingdom.
Condition: Overall good condition with old wear, casting irregularities, small fatigue cracks, light nicks, small losses, few surface scratches, one fingertip with a loss, and old repairs with soldering marks to the back. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina.
