China, 15th-16th century. Finely cast seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base with beaded edges, his left hand lowered in dhyana mudra holding a bowl filled with myrobalan fruit, and the right hand extended in varada mudra, holding a single fruit between the thumb and index finger. He wears loose-fitting robes that fall in elegant folds around the body.

The face is well modeled in a serene expression with sinuously lidded eyes, arched brows, and bow-shaped smiling lips, flanked by long pendulous earlobes. His hair is arranged in tight curls over the high ushnisha topped by a jewel.

Condition: Very good condition with old wear and casting irregularities, flaking and losses to gilt, remnants of pigment, minuscule dents and few light nicks. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina with areas of verdigris to the interior.

Weight: 829 g
Dimensions: Height 17 cm

Bhaishajyaguru, or the Buddha of Medicine and Healing can be identified by the jar held in the left hand. He is considered a healer who alleviates suffering and offers solace to the afflicted through the medicine of his teachings. The eponymous Bhaishajyaguruvaiduryaprabharaja Sutra, generally called the Medicine Buddha Sutra in English, describes Bhaishajyaguru as a bodhisattva who made twelve great vows. On achieving full enlightenment, he became the Buddha of the Eastern Pure Land of Vaiduryanirbhasa, or ‘Pure Lapis Lazuli.’ There, he is attended by two bodhisattva symbolizing the light of the sun and of the moon, respectively: Suryaprabha (Chinese, Riguang Bianzhao Pusa) and Chandraprabha (Chinese, Yueguang Bianzhao Pusa).
