Description

A GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF BUDDHA, 17TH-18TH CENTURY

China. Well carved, the standing Buddha with elongated earlobes and a benevolent face beneath a prominent ushnisha formed with coiled curls reserved with an urna, wearing a thick overlapping draped robe opening to the bare chest and falling to the feet in richly carved folds. His right hand is lowered in varada mudra and the left extended forward. The back with a sealed oblong aperture.

Provenance: Collection of Alexander F?rster, thence by descent to Dr. Michael F?rster, and thence by descent in the same family. Alexander F?rster was an Austrian art dealer and expert who worked as an appraiser of Asian art for the auction house Dorotheum in Vienna during the 1960s.
Condition: Overall good condition with old wear, expected minor age cracks, few minute losses to hair, minor old repairs to extremities, small touchups here and there. The lacquer commensurate with age and with several layers which have been renewed over a long period of time.

Weight: 414 g
Dimensions: Height 37 cm

Coating carved wood figures with gilt-lacquer is a technique that appears to have emerged during the early part of the Ming dynasty, continuing to the Qing dynasty and echoing Buddhist bronze figures in form and decoration.
