Description

A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF TSONGKHAPA, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Tibetan-Chinese. Finely cast, seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base, with beaded edges on both the upper and lower sections. The lama’s hands are positioned in dharmachakra mudra, with a pair of lotus flowers trailing along his upper arms. His monastic robes and hems are richly incised with scrolling foils. His finely colored head is modeled with a serene expression, while his head is topped with a long cap. The copper sealing plate neatly engraved with a crossed-vajra symbol.

Provenance: German private collection. A private collection in the Netherlands, acquired from the above.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, minor dents, few small nicks, light scratches, minor rubbing to gilt and pigments, minor losses to attributes. Original sealing.

Weight: 1,395 g
Dimensions: Height 17.5 cm

Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) is the founder of the Gelug order of Tibetan Buddhism, the ‘newest’ of the extant schools. Tsongkhapa studied the traditions of the Nyingma, Sakya, Kagyü, and particularly Kadam lineages, and codified certain principles of all of them in the Gelug tradition. Today, the order is the most popularly followed in Tibet, with its head, the Dalai Lama, seen as the spiritual leader of the country. The Gelug tradition is also known as the ‘Yellow Hat Sect’, for the color of their pointed caps, and Tsongkhapa can often be identified by the hat as well as the sword and manuscript which sit in lotus blossoms at his shoulders.
