The people inhabiting the lower reaches of the Sepik River traditionally created distinctive ancestor images, whose totemic presences were believed to offer protection and good luck to the village clans. Erected in lines standing shoulder-to-shoulder within the men’s ceremonial house, in the past, powerful ancestor figures were reportedly consulted before hunting expeditions or raids on enemy villages.
