Description

A RED SANDSTONE FIGURE OF SHIVA, ANGKOR PERIOD, BANTEAY SREI STYLE

Khmer Empire, late 10th century. Well carved in a slender profile, wearing a sampot tied at the waist with a butterfly knot to the back. The bearded face sensitively carved with a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes with neatly incised pupils, and full lips, incised beard and moustache, the hair secured by an ornate diadem tied at the back of the head.

Provenance: From the private collection of Jean Dumoulin, Overijse, Belgium, acquired in Bangkok during the mid-1990s. A copy of a provenance statement, written and signed by Jean Dumoulin, dated 2 August 2024, and confirming the above, accompanies this lot. Jean Dumoulin developed a great passion for Asian culture as a young man, and frequently traveled the Asian continent. His private collection of Asian works of art comprises sculptures and objects he acquired in Burma, Thailand, and on the European market.
Condition: Good condition, wear commensurate to age. Obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, few nicks, chips, scratches, and structural cracks.

Dimensions: Height 66 cm (excl. stand), 74 cm (incl. stand)

Mounted on a metal stand. (2)

Banteay Srei is a 10th century temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and Parvati. It is built largely of red sandstone, a medium that lends itself to the elaborate decorative wall carvings which are still observable today. The buildings themselves are miniature in scale, unusually so, when measured by the standards of Angkorian construction. These factors have made the temple extremely popular with tourists, and have led to it being widely praised as the jewel of Khmer art.

Literature comparison:
Compare the similar face of Shiva in a related Banteay Srei style sandstone figure of Umamaheshvara, 65 cm high, in the National Museum of Cambodia, inventory number Ka.1797.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Related
Auction: Christie’s New York, 18 March 2015, lot 4060

Description: A red sandstone figure of a male deity, Khmer, Angkor period, Angkor Wat style, 12th century
Expert remark: Compare the closely related modeling, manner of carving, and red sandstone, with similar face and diadem. Note the later dating and the size (100.4 cm).
