The scorpion was the emblem of the Praetorian Guard, the Roman emperor's personal army elite unit that served various roles for the Roman emperor including being a bodyguard unit, counterintelligence, crowd control and gathering military intelligence. The praetorian scorpion has long been recognized as a reference to Tiberius, who was born under the astrological sign of the Scorpio and first concentrated the Praetorian Guard in its own camp in Rome, giving it full corporate identity. See Amy Russel and Monica Hellstr?m (eds.), The Social Dynamics of Roman Imperial Imagery, Cambridge University Press, 2020, p. 135.
