Description

A GRAY SCHIST HEAD OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, ANCIENT REGION OF GANDHARA, 2ND-3RD CENTURY

Kushan period. Finely carved with a bow-shaped mouth and heavy lidded, almond-shaped eyes beneath arched eyebrows centered by a circular urna, suggestive of a deeply meditative state. The head surmounted by rows of wavy locks that rise over the ushnisha. The reverse flattened indicating the head was part of a larger relief or life-size statue backed by a halo.

Provenance: Shirley Day Asian Art. A private collection in the United States, acquired from the above (invoice lost). Shirley Day has been a prominent dealer in early Buddhist and Hindu sculpture since 1973, initially establishing her gallery in the prestigious St James's area of London. Over time, she expanded her international presence by opening additional galleries in Brussels and New York City. Her deep expertise has facilitated the acquisition of significant works by leading institutions worldwide.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, chips, nicks, scratches, old fills with associated minor touchups to the right eye and left eyebrow, few small fissures.

Weight: 3.5 kg (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 23.5 cm (excl. stand), 34.1 cm (incl. stand)

Mounted to a modern stand. (2)

Having renounced his life as a prince, the Buddha is depicted in the current lot without ornamentation, though his elongated earlobes still bear the marks of years spent wearing heavy jewelry. The naturalistic style of the Gandharan period is evident in the finely detailed locks of hair, gathered and tied above the ushnisha, in contrast to the later periods, where the Buddha's hair is more often represented in stylized snail shell curls. The refined minimalism of this sculpture is further enhanced by the lustrous, dark schist – a prized material with a fine grain that allowed sculptors to achieve exceptional detail, often reserved for the most revered figures.

Literature comparison:
Compare with a nearly complete image of Shakyamuni from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 2014.188, which offers valuable insight into how the current lot would have originally appeared.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
