Description

AN INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTING OF AN AMOROUS COUPLE, MEWAR, CIRCA 1690

India, Rajasthan. Opaque pigments and gold on paper. Finely painted with a royal couple seated under a canopy, the nobleman with a bolster tucked under his arm evaluates his companion’s necklace as she turns her face coyly, lifting her left hand to feed a morsel to her partner, all against a vibrant red background.

Provenance: From a private collection in Switzerland. The back inscribed in pencil, ‘early Mewar - 1690’.
Condition: Old wear, some rubbing, flaking, minor soiling, creasing, and minuscule losses. Old repairs and touchups. Trimmed. The backing reinforced.

Dimensions: Size 10.5 x 9.5 cm

Expert’s note:
The present lot is likely a sizable, standalone fragment of a larger illustration, see for example a closely related painting from a Ragamala depicting the Panchama Ragini, Mewar, circa 1660, sold at Christie’s New York, 20 March 2012, lot 289.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related miniature painting of a couple seated under a tree, dated ca. 1700, in the Brooklyn Museum, accession number 80.277.13.
