Description

A SILVERED BRONZE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA, SRIVIJAYA

Indonesia, Sumatra, circa 7th-8th century. Standing in a slight tribhanga, the deity with one hand lowered in varada murdra, the other held in karana mudra and clasped around the stem of a lotus blossoming at the elbow. Dressed simply in a long dhoti, finely incised with pleats, and secured by a knotted belt to the waist. The face with a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes under elegantly arched brows, centered by a raised urna, and full lips forming a gentle smile. His hair is arranged in a high chignon centered by a diminutive, seated figure of Amitabha.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Onno Janssens Collection, Netherlands, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe. Onno Janssens (b. 1941) is an Olympiad bridge player and prominent collector of Himalayan and Buddhist art. After studying Tibetology, he began in the 1990s to assemble an impressive collection including thangkas, mandalas, stupas, ritual implements, and sculptures in bronze, copper, and stone, which he acquired from auction houses and dealers of the highest order. A part of the collection was sold at Christie’s New York on 22 March 2011, in a legendary sale which at the time achieved a record total for Indian and Southeast Asian Art. A selection of 88 of Himalayan objects from the Onno Janssens Collection were offered, next to other famous collectors including James and Marilynn Asldorf and Isao Kurita. His collection reflects his eye for quality and rarity, but also his desire for uncovering that rare and coveted work that few others, if any have. In his own words 'to put it quite simply, I’ve always felt it important to buy what I like. Any time I consider acquiring a new work for my collection, I must hold it in my hands. Only then will I truly know if it inspires me.’ Copies of a Certificate of Authenticity and Declaration of Legal Origin, accompany this lot.
Condition: In good condition, with extensive old wear and expected casting irregularities. Some rubbing, two small nicks to the back, and areas of encrustation. The surface shows minor pitting consistent with corrosion and metal fatigue, likely due to prolonged burial. The bronze has developed a naturally grown, attractive patina with malachite encrustations.
