Description

A KHMER BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA, THAILAND, LOPBURI PERIOD, 13TH CENTURY

Finely cast standing in samabhanga with both hands held in shuni mudra, wearing a long diaphanous sanghati secured at the waist by an elaborate tasseled belt and richly adorned with ornate jewelry. His contemplative expression with heavy-lidded downcast eyes, raised urna, and full lips. The hair arranged in conical chignon behind a multi-pointed crown.

Provenance: The Ullman Collection, Italy, thence by direct descent. The Ullman Collection is a significant Italian collection of Sino-Tibetan and broader Far Eastern art, built over 25 years through extensive research, travels, and connections with scholars and collectors. This passion was supported by an extensive library built over the years and field experiences gained through numerous trips starting in the late 1960s. Key influences included Professor Canella, an eminent scholar and researcher from the University of Ferrara, and the painter Lorenzo Alessandri. The collection gained recognition through several exhibitions between 1991 and 2002, including the 1991 exhibition Sino-Tibetan Art from the 15th to the 19th Century, promoted by INA-Assitalia per la Cultura, and later The Sacred Mountains: Ancient Art of Tibet, sponsored by the municipality of Modena in 1994. The collection was partially transferred to the Museum of Oriental Art in Turin in 2003.

Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear, signs of weathering and erosion, casting flaws, small nicks, tiny losses, minor dents. The bronze is covered in a rich, naturally grown patina with scattered malachite encrustations. Remnants of ritual pigment.

Weight: 756.5 (incl. stand)
Dimensions: 20.4 cm (excl. stand), 24.2 cm (incl. stand)

From the Dvaravati period, Lopburi was an active Buddhist center in south-central Thailand and came under the rule of Angkor in the 11th century. The Lopburi style followed the Mahayana Buddhist tradition and displays many stylistic similarities with Cambodian bronzes, in particular bronzes of the Angkor Wat and Bayon style. The physiognomy of these Lopburi images is typified by a human and friendly expression, revealing Thai influence. Moreover, these bronzes are often executed with finely detailed jewellery, as can be seen in the present bronze.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related bronze Buddha, Lopburi, c. 12 century, 35 cm high, exhibited in London by Joost Van den Bergh in Objects of Worship: Jain, Gandhara and Hindu Sculpture, 2017, no. OOW03.

Auction result comparison:
