Description

A GILT-LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA IN THE PARILEYYAKA FOREST, RATTANAKOSIN KINGDOM

Thailand, late 18th to 19th century. Seated in bhadrasana atop an elaborate, tiered and cushioned throne, the Buddha rests on a pedestal decorated with geometric and lotus-patterned bands along the edges. His right hand reaches downward in bhumisparsha mudra, while his left hand rests on his knee. He wears a close-fitting sanghati finely lacquered with intricate floral motifs that evoke the texture of richly embroidered cloth, the cloth draped over his shoulder decorated with glass inlays.

The serene face bears a meditative expression, with gently downcast eyes, arched brows, and a tranquil smile. Framed by elongated earlobes, the head is covered with tightly coiled curls rising into a domed ushnisha, crowned by a flaming ketumala. In front of the Buddha, an elephant offers water in a vessel and a monkey presents a honeycomb on a branch, referencing the Parileyyaka forest episode from his life.

Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a private estate in Paris, France.
Condition: Good condition with expected old wear, casting irregularities, losses and dents, flaking and minor losses to lacquer, wear to glass inlays. Fine, naturally grown patina overall.

Weight: 1,062 g
Dimensions: Height 21 cm

The Parileyyaka tale recounts a legend from the Buddha’s life. Disheartened by quarrels among his disciples in Kosambi, the Buddha retreated alone to the Parileyyaka Forest to meditate and fast. There, he was cared for by a devoted elephant who brought him water. Observing this, a monkey discovered a honeycomb and, wishing to honor the Buddha, offered it as a gift. Moved by the sincerity of the animals, the Buddha broke his fast. The monkey, overjoyed by the Buddha’s acceptance, leapt through the treetops in celebration but tragically fell to his death, only to be reborn in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three Gods as a reward for his selfless act. The story became especially popular in 18th and 19th century Thailand, where images of this scene were used in rituals to promote long life, and it is still honored today during the festival of Madhu Purnima.
