Description

A MINIATURE GILT-DECORATED AND ENAMELED ‘IMITATION BRONZE’ VASE, FANGHU, QIANLONG YUZHI MARK, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

China. The archaistic vessel is of baluster form with square section, finely enameled in turquoise, blue, green, and gilt to imitate ancient weathering, corrosion and patina, as it would be found on an excavated archaic bronze. Decorated to each side of the body with a panel enclosing two kui-dragon scrolls within archaistic brackets, the neck flanked with phoenix handles, a band with dots enclosing the upper rim, the interior and foot finely covered in gilt.

The gilt recessed base with an impressed six-character seal mark da Qing Qianlong yuzhi.

Provenance: French trade. Apparently found in a house on the French Riviera.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, rubbing to the gilt, light surface scratches, and small touchups to enamels. Possibly with a minor old restoration to the neck.

Weight: 149.1 g
Dimensions: Height 11.3 cm

Among the many simulations created by the imperial workshops for the Qianlong emperor, those imitating archaic ritual bronzes appear to have been the most popular. Ritual bronze vessels particularly of the late Shang (c.1600-c.1050BC) and Western Zhou (c.1050-771BC) period collected by the emperor inspired precise trompe-l'oeil copies as well as 'modern' interpretations, like the present vase. Furthermore, bronze shapes and design elements entered the general repertoire of Qianlong porcelain and provided inspiration for vessels otherwise unrelated to the ancient metal versions.

Bronzes were simulated through a variety of glazes, typically a brown of 'café-au-lait' or 'teadust' type heightened with gold, and this was often combined with a mottled turquoise or green glaze to evoke the blue-green patina of ancient metalwork. The lavish use of robin's-egg glaze seen on the present vase is rare and unusual.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related enameled vase, dated to the Qianlong period, 21 cm tall, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, accession number 中瓷001946N000000000. Compare another related vase at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 4 October 2011, lot 1949, described as a fine and rare gold-ground archaistic bottle vase, note the closely related archaistic design and robin’s egg glaze and similar size (15 cm).
