Description

A PAINTED POTTERY FIGURE OF AN ATTENDANT, MING DYNASTY

China, 1368-1644. Standing atop a rectangular base, dressed in a long robe below a black coat fastened with buttons at the chest, the oval face slightly turned sideways, highlighted with black pupils, eyebrows, and red lips, and surmounted by a conical hat. His right hand raised and the left arm hanging beside his body, fully covered by the sleeve.

Provenance: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, London. Ben Janssens opened his eponymous gallery in 1996 in London, specializing in early Chinese art. Previously he had been a director at Spink & Son. He also served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of TEFAF Maastricht.
Condition: Overall good condition, commensurate with age, with old wear, firing irregularities, few tiny chips, losses to pigments, the base and one foot with small old fills and touchups, losses and repairs with touchups to hands.
