Description

A BURNISHED BLACK POTTERY JAR, HU, NEOLITHIC PERIOD, LATE DAWENKOU CULTURE

China, 2800-2400 BC. Well potted, the globular body supported on a short, wide foot and rising to a long neck gently flaring towards a thin-lipped mouth. Covered overall in a matte black burnish, the interior revealing the natural clay tones of the vessel.

Provenance: U.S. art trade. Acquired from a North American private estate that included a substantial and well-curated collection of ancient Neolithic pottery.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Ancient wear, flaking, cracks, old repairs, losses to base.

Compare a related neolithic black pouring vessel, Dawenkou culture, dated 4300-2600 BC, 17.2 cm high, in the Harvard Art Museums, accession number 2006.170.86. Compare a closely related burnished black earthenware hu-form jar, dated 2800-2400 BC, 15.4 cm, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1992.297.2.
