Description

? A RARE ‘HORSE AND GROOM’ PAINTED POTTERY GROUP, TANG DYNASTY

Scientific analysis report: Thermoluminescence analysis reports have been issued by Oxford Authentication for both figures, based on sample numbers C106g58 and C106g57, dated 31 March 2006 and 3 April 2006, setting the firing date of two samples between 1000 and 1600 years ago and three samples between 900 and 1500 years ago respectively, consistent with the dating above. Copies of the two reports accompany this lot.

China, 8th century. Well modeled in lively postures, each atop a shaped flat base, the groom's head and body tilted to his right, both hands raised to handle the reins, wearing a fitted green robe with colorful trims over a pair of tall boots, his facial features carefully painted, his hair gathered in two buns. The horse lowering its head to gnaw at its left knee, well-groomed with mane neatly trimmed, the green saddle lined with a leopard-skin saddle blanket.

Provenance: A private New York collection. Bonhams New York, 20 March 2023, lot 124, sold for USD 25,500 or approx. EUR 24,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). A & J Speelman Oriental Art, London, United Kingdom, acquired from the above. With a label inscribed with an inventory number, ‘WIC49A’. Jules Speelman is a world-leading dealer and collector of East Asian art with 60 years of experience. In 1964 he joined his late father, Alfred, in the family business which already stretched back three generations to 19th century Holland and expanded into England around the turn of the century. Originally, A & J Speelman dealt with antiques, from European ceramics, silver, tapestries, and furniture to Chinese porcelain, and works of art. With his father, Jules gradually shifted the focus towards Asia and under Jules Speelman's skilled direction, A & J Speelman is now considered amongst the foremost dealers in Asian antiques, with a particular emphasis on figurative sculpture and works of art from the past 2000 years.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, encrustations, nicks, chips, minuscule cracks, drilled holes from sample-taking, small old repairs and touchups, all as generally expected from authentic Tang dynasty excavations.

Weight: 1,556 g (the horse) and 498 g (the groom)
Dimensions: Length 31 cm (the horse), Height 22 cm (the groom)

Pottery horses such as the present lot held deep significance, representing high social status and immense wealth. Proudly displayed in the tombs of elite, they served as a testament to the deceased's prominence and position within society. The Chinese firmly believed in the continuity between the earthly and afterlife realms, emphasizing the need for essential provisions during the journey beyond. Thus, by including these majestic horses in their final resting places, the departed were revered, honored, and equipped for their transcendental voyage.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related horse with its groom excavated by the Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology from the palace cemetery in Xi’an, dated to the Tang dynasty. Compare a similarly modeled painted pottery horse, 49 cm long, dated to the Tang dynasty, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1985.214.138.
