Description

A SANCAI-GLAZED APPLIQUé-DECORATED JARLET, TANG DYNASTY

China, 618-907. Of globular form, the rounded sides rising from a gently recessed foot to a waisted neck with an everted lip, applied to one side with a foliate medallion, and covered on the interior and exterior with irregularly splashed vibrant glazes in emerald-green, amber, and straw running together and cascading in wild splatters and streaks to form an abstract design. The unglazed lower body and short spreading foot reveal the buff ware beneath.

Provenance: Collection of Royall Tyler, probably acquired around 1910, and thence by descent. Inscribed to the base ‘α.45-6’ in black ink. Royall Tyler (1884-1953) was an American historian, diplomat, economist, and art connoisseur. In 1909 he published Spain, a Study of her Life and Arts, the first work in English to recognize the genius of El Greco. He was appointed by the British government to edit the Calendar of State Papers related to negotiations between England and Spain in the time of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. With Hayford Peirce (the older brother of the painter Waldo Peirce) he published a pioneering study of Byzantine art. He died just after completing his posthumously published biography of The Emperor Charles the Fifth. Tyler also helped to inspire and shape the major collections of Byzantine art brought together by Robert Woods Bliss and Mildred Barnes Bliss, housed at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, DC.
Condition: Good condition with wear and firing irregularities including crackling, burst bubbles, kiln grit, and glaze recesses. Minuscule nibbling to foot, a small loss to the appliqué.
