Description

A BLACK STONE STELE FRAGMENT DEPICTING PINGALA AND NIKSHUBHA, PALA PERIOD, 11TH-12TH CENTURY

Northeastern India. Finely carved to depict Surya’s attendant Pingala standing in a slight tribhanga holding a pen and pot of ink in hand. The bearded figure is dressed in an incised dhoti and adorned with beaded jewelry. He is accompanied by the Goddess Nikshubha (Earth) who is similarly dressed. The two deities flank the diminutive figure of Usha with a bow and arrow, all raised above a pedestal adorned with galloping horses.

Provenance: From a private collection in Spain.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, remnants of varnish, scattered nicks and scratches, small chips to exposed areas, some with associated old fills.

Weight: 3.8 kg
Dimensions: Height 27 cm (incl. stand), 35 cm (excl. stand)

Expert’s note:
The present fragment is from a larger Surya panel like the closely related example sold at Bonhams London, 7 October 2014, lot 267.

Pingala, one of the attendants of Lord Surya, is the recorder who writes down mankind’s good and bad deeds. In Vedic hymns, the sun god rescues the world from the fear of darkness and nightmares. His attendants, Danda and Pingala represent the physical and intellectual means of achieving one’s goals. Danda is young and carries a spear (war) whilst Pingala, bearded and wise-looking, holds a pen and paper (diplomacy).

The cult of Surya maintained a key position in the hierarchy of deities into the medieval period. Although usurped by Visnu and his solar aspects, Surya nonetheless maintained his position as a major, if secondary, deity. Major temples were dedicated to Surya across India, as witnessed by Konarak in Orissa, and Modera in Gujarat.
