Description

A BRONZE FIGURE OF YASHODA WITH THE INFANT KRISHNA, SOUTH INDIA, 15TH-17TH CENTURY

Well cast standing atop a circular base, wearing a long dhoti and adorned with plain beaded jewelry, holding an infant in both hands who suckles on one breast and grasps the other. Her face is finely modeled with round eyes below thick arched brows, the lips gently pursed into a smile, flanked by ears with pierced distended lobes, the hair fashioned into an asymmetrical chignon.

Provenance: English trade. Acquired from a private estate.
Condition: Overall good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities, small nicks, light scratches, an old repair to the lower section, a loss to the base. Remnants of pigment. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina with malachite and cuprite encrustations.

Weight: 191.5 g
Dimensions: Height 17 cm

Mounted on a circular jade stand. (2)

This tender image of maternal affection depicts the child Krishna being nursed by his foster mother, Yashoda. In infancy Krishna had been hidden from the murderous king Kamsa of Mathura to be raised in safety by foster parents.
