Description

A MUGHAL SANDSTONE PANEL, JALI, NORTHERN INDIA, LATE 17TH - 18TH CENTURY

Expert’s note: Jali refers to a perforated stone or lattice screen, often featuring ornamental patterns created using geometry, calligraphy, or natural motifs. Jalis allow air and light to circulate within architectural spaces, making them ideal for India's harsh summers. This decorative element is common in Indo-Islamic and Indian architecture and is closely related to the mashrabiya in Islamic architecture.

Of arched form, intricately carved in openwork with overlapping foliage vines bearing floral blossoms, centered by a six-petaled flower-head flanked by a pair of collared long-tailed parrots.

Provenance: London trade.
Condition: Very good condition with old wear, traces of weathering, minuscule nicks, few small losses.

Dimensions: Length 75 cm (excl. stand), Height 39 cm (excl. stand)

With a fitted, modern metal stand. (2)

Literature comparison:
Compare a Mughal sandstone relief panel carved with similar parrots, dated to the late 17th century, exhibited by the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore.
