The lower section tapers into a flared base encircled by stylized leaf motifs.

Tinder tubes were originally created to hold a flammable rope or cloth, which could be ignited and used to light cannon fuses. However, this particular example, likely produced for the colonial market, was probably intended for a more refined purpose, such as being passed around after dinner for gentlemen to light their cigars.

Trichinopoly, now known as Tiruchirappalli, was once a French enclave in South India. Though located less than 350 kilometers from Madras, then under the control of the British East India Company and later British rule, the region developed a distinctive silverworking tradition. Trichinopoly artisans combined elements of the 'swami' style popular in Madras with exceptionally intricate and densely rendered floral and foliate motifs. The pieces crafted here were typically small and refined luxury items, such as snuff boxes and perfume flasks. Among colonial Indian silver, works from Trichinopoly are considered relatively rare.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related Trichinopoly silver tinder tube made for the India stand at the 1862 Internation Exhibition in London, sold at Michael Backman, London, no. 9390.
