拍品描述
A WOOD SANBASO MASK OF KOKUSHIKI-JOJapan, 16th-17th century, Momoyama period (1573-1615) to Edo period (1615-1868)Boldly carved with amiable expression, the old man with wrinkled forehead and narrowed eyes, thick nose and full lips, the jaw articulated with a short cord. The eyebrows, mustache, and chin beard are rendered with strands of horsehair.HEIGHT 17.8 cmCondition: Good condition with expected wear, few scattered chips and scratches, flaking, and expected age cracks to the lacquer.Provenance: From the collection of Wilhelm Kage, thence by descent. Two old labels inscribed with inventory number “3703”. Wilhelm Kage (1889-1960), Swedish designer and ceramist, made a trip to Japan in the spring of 1956, offered by the porcelain factory Gustavsbergs he worked for. This trip was intended to study Japanese craftsmanship and ceramics, as well as to acquire objects for an exhibition at the Nordiska Kompaniet department store in Stockholm. Kage toured several cities and towns in Japan, accompanied by cartoonist Gunnar Brusewitz and writer Gustaf N?sstr?m, who documented the visit in the book Flyg mot soluppgangen. The surname “Kage” interestingly translates as “craftsmanship” in Japanese, which generated a special connection with the local craftsmen, who enthusiastically welcomed the Swedish designer.Kokushiki-jo is a mask worn during Sanbaso, a dance performed on the Noh theater stage, after the Okina dance, which uses the Okina or Hakushiki-jo mask. Okina dance seems to have been established as a ritual in the late Heian period (794-1192) and celebrates peace and good harvests. The masks of Okina and Sanbaso are sacred, and even today the dancers will abstain from eating made or drinking alcohol for a certain period of time before wearing these masks. While Okina is a white and noble mask, Sanbaso is a black, sunburned mask, with sparse teeth and a friendly face. The head of the Noh troupe is supposed to play the Okina, and the Kyogen actors are supposed to play the Sanbaso. The jaw of the mask is separated into an upper and lower part, tied with a cord to make the jaw move. Bits of hair are implanted for the eyebrows, mustache, and beards of these masks.Museum comparison:Compare a related Sanbaso mask of Kokushiki-jo, attributed to Nosei, dated to the 14th century, in the Tokyo National Museum, collection reference number C-1887. Auction comparison:Compare a related Sanbaso mask of Kokushiki-jo, dated to the Edo period, at Christie’s, Japanese Art including property of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 28 March 2006, New York, lot 353 (sold for USD 1,800 or approx. EUR 2,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).
