By Sukenojo Terahata (1892-1970), signed Sukenojo sakuJapan, c. 1940Published: World Art Society, Monsters & Marvels, January 2022, p. 186-187, no. 48 (dated 1940).Heavily cast as a ferocious lion dog standing foursquare, its mouth wide open in a powerful roar revealing teeth and tongue, the bushy mane and scrolling tail finely rendered. The base signed SUKENOJO saku [made by Sukenojo].LENGTH 25 cmWEIGHT 4,979Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and casting irregularities.Provenance: Arie Vos, Kitsune Gallery, Brussels, 2022. Dutch private collection, acquired from the above.With the original wood tomobako inscribed Seido shishi [A bronze shishi lion].Sukenojo Terahata (1892-1970) graduated from the sculpture department of the Tokyo Fine Arts School (now the Tokyo University of Fine Arts) in 1918. In 1920, he became an engineer at the Korean Governor-General's Office and was in charge of general architectural sculpture for the new Governor-General's Office building. He was a member of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Councilors and Judges of the Korean Art Exhibition, and a member of the 5th Counsellor and Judges of the same exhibition. He was a professor at the Tokyo Higher School of Arts and Crafts and the Tokyo Technical College, and moved from the Kozo-sha to the Shin Kozo-sha Sculpture Department in 1935, where he became a member representative of the Sculpture and Crafts Department. He also served as executive director of the Koa Sculpture Culture League, director of the Japan Sculptor's Club, and director of the Tokoname Japanese Ceramic Art Institute in Aichi Prefecture.
