拍品描述
A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF DARUMA, STYLE OF SUZUKI TOKOKUUnsignedJapan, Edo (Tokyo), second-half of the 19th centurySeated cross-legged, wearing his characteristic long flowing robe deeply incised with folds, partially executed in ittobori (carved with a single knife or cutting edge), his hands locked and pulled to his lap, about to raise and stretch them above his head. The face of the emaciated Daruma carved with wide eyes below raised brows, the mouth wide open as he yawns languorously in an exaggerated manner of a man desperately in need of rest. The eyes inlaid in dark horn and the teeth inlaid in bone. The back carved with a single reed, alluding to Daruma’s journey on a single reed on the Yangzi River. Irregularly formed, asymmetrical himotoshi to the underside. Executed in the style of Suzuki Tokoku, yet lacking his distinct inlays, so likely by a predecessor of Tokoku, such as Komin.HEIGHT 3.5 cmCondition: Excellent condition.Bodhidharma (Japanese: Daruma) was a sixth-century Indian sage who is credited with transmitting Zen Buddhist teachings to China. After an unsuccessful encounter with the Chinese Liang-dynasty Emperor Wu, Bodhidharma is said to have sailed up the Yangzi River on a single reed to continue his journey to promote Zen.Auction comparison:Compare a related wood netsuke of Daruma, by Suzuki Tokoku, also partially worked in ittobori, late 19th-early 20th century, 3.3 cm high, at Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 16 May 2024, London, lot 32 (sold for GBP 7,680).
