SHINKEISAI: A FINE INLAID WOOD AND EBONY NETSUKE OF A SAMBASO DANCERBy Shinkeisai, signed Shinkeisai 真敬斎Japan, Edo (Tokyo), mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Portraying a Sambaso dancer depicted in typical posture, standing on one foot, wearing a characteristic striped eboshi tied with a ribbon under his chin and a voluminous robe with finely engraved cranes and pine. His face hidden behind a mask carved from ebony wood and inlaid with minute bone details. Two himotoshi to the back and signed below SHINKEISAI.HEIGHT 4.5 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor wear.The Sambaso dance derived from Noh theatre and was traditionally performed in Kabuki plays to open the new season of performances. The ritual dance was short and was designed to purify the performance area.Shinkeisai is listed in The Netsuke Handbook of Ueda Reikichi, p. 282, no. 978, translated by Raymond Bushell as ‘active during the Tempo and Keio era (1830-1867), wood, usually carved figure netsuke’.Auction comparison:Compare a related wood netsuke of a Sambaso dancer, by Hojitsu, dated to the mid-19th century, at Zacke, Fine Netsuke & Sagemono, 8 November 2024, Vienna, lot 239 (sold for EUR 7,800).
