SHUMIN: A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A MONK WITH MOKUGYOBy Shumin, signed Shumin &#-32225;珉 and kakihanJapan, Edo, mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Finely carved and with detailed incision work, depicting a monk leaning on a mokugyo (temple bell), the bell with handles formed as confronting dragons sharing a tama in their mouths and superbly hollowed, the monk holding a drumstick, his face with a serene expression. Natural himotoshi through the mokugyo handle, signed SHUMIN with the artist’s kakihan.LENGTH 5.3 cmCondition: Good condition with minor wear. Minuscule chips to the ears. A small nick to the back of robe.Auction comparison: Compare a closely related wood netsuke of a monk with mokugyo, by Shoraku, first half of the 19th century, 4.3 cm long, at Zacke, Three-Day Auction: Asian Art Discoveries, 3 September 2024, Vienna, lot 597 (sold for EUR 1,820).
