A RARE WOOD NETSUKE DEPICTING THE LEGEND OF WATONAI AND THE TIGER IN THE BAMBOO GROVEUnsignedJapan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Finely carved to depict the climax of the confrontation between Watonai and a ferocious tiger. Watonai is depicted standing on one foot, lending movement to the struggle, his katana undrawn as he raises the sacred talisman to finally overcome the tiger. Natural himotoshi.HEIGHT 4.3 cmCondition: Good condition with old wear and traces of use. Old repairs and touchups to two legs.Provenance: From the collection of Mike Thaler, former president of the Oregon Netsuke Society Chapter. The seventeenth century figure, Watonai was later and more popularly known as Coxinga (Lord of the Imperial Surname; Kokusen’ya in Japanese), was born to a Chinese father and a Japanese mother on the island of Hirado. Arriving in China to support the remnants of the Ming rulers against the Manchus, Watonai and his mother find themselves suddenly attacked by a tiger in a bamboo grove. Proving his courage, he proclaims to keep his katana undrawn whilst protecting his mother and defeating the wild beast.Museum comparison:Compare a related woodblock print of Watonai and the Tiger in the Bamboo Grove, circa 1789s, in the Cleveland Museum of Art, accession number 1916.1167.
