TOJU: A FINE FIVE-CASE YAMIMAKI LACQUER INRO WITH CROWSBy Kanshosai Toju(sai), signed Toju 桃壽 and kakihanJapan, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Of upright rectangular shape, lacquered in yamimaki-e (black on black lacquer). The design masterfully depicts three crows in flight, with two on one side and the third on the reverse. The interior cases of red lacquer with gold fundame rims.LENGTH 4.4 cm, HEIGHT 7.8 cmCondition: Good condition with minuscule nicks to edges and some general wear throughout. Provenance: Beaussant Lefevre, Art d’Asie, 20 Novembre 2008, Paris, lot 225. French private collection, acquired from the above.Active at the turn of the 18th-19th century, Toju is considered to be the most gifted of Iizuka Toyo's pupils and is believed to have become his successor.
