TACHIBANA GYOKUZAN: A FINE METAL-INLAID FIVE-CASE LACQUER INRO WITH A CHINESE SAGEBy Tachibana Gyokuzan, signed Tachibana Gyokuzan 橘玉山ga 画 and kakihanJapan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Published: Earle, Joe [ed.] (1995) E. Wrangham, The Index of Inro Artists, p. 263 (only the signature is illustrated).Of upright rectangular form with rounded edges, bearing a dense gold e-nashiji ground, superbly decorated with gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. The design depicts a Chinese sage standing with an attendant seated in a garden, their figures inlaid in shakudo. In the garden, a rock is intricately embellished with kirigane flakes, and a basho (fiber banana) plant. The garden is framed by a fine mother-of-pearl-inlaid fence. The rock continues onto the reverse, where shuro (Chinese windmill palms) are depicted standing by a stream. Signed to the underside TACHIBANA GYOKUZAN ga [painted by Tachibana Gyokuzan]. The interior cases of nashiji with gold fundame rims.LENGTH 4.8 cm, HEIGHT 8.9 cmCondition: Very good condition with only minor wear and tiny losses to inlays.Provenance: Sotheby’s, London, 1974. Edward A. ‘Ted’ Wrangham (1928-2009) formed one of the most important collections of Japanese Art in modern times. His reference book ‘The Index of Inro Artists’ (1995) is considered one of the most important English-language studies on Japanese lacquer ever published.For the artist see Earle, Joe [ed.] (1995) The Index of Inro Artists, p. 63 (see farthest left bottom row signature for an identical Gyokuzan 玉山 signature). The artist made netsuke, inro and ojime and may have been affiliated with the Kajikawa workshop.
