UnsignedJapan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Of upright rectangular shape, bearing a kinji ground, finely decorated with gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, as well as e-nashiji. Kinko sennin is shown dressed in an elaborately decorated kimono, holding a mother-of-pearl-inlaid fan, as he rides on the back of a large koi (carp), its visible eye finely inlaid behind glass. The figures are surrounded by stylized waves. The interior cases of nashiji with gold fundame rims.LENGTH 5.2 cm, HEIGHT 6.8 cmCondition: Good condition with tiny losses along the edges and to the interior, a small loss to the fan inlay, minor discoloration to the lacquered ground along the upper edge and a very fine hairline to the top case. Some general expected wear throughout. Museum comparison:Compare a related five-case lacquer inro with a large carp, similarly executed, dated to the 19th century, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, object number 13.67.21.
