拍品描述
? A ZESHIN-STYLE LACQUERED AND INLAID PAULOWNIA (KIRI) WOOD SIX-CASE INRO WITH LEAFY VINESUnsignedJapan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)Of large upright rectangular form, finely decorated with a harmonious blend of mixed materials on a kiri (paulownia wood) ground. The design features a Zeshin-style depiction of Kuzu, the Japanese arrowroot vine, one of the revered Seven Grasses of Autumn (aki no nanakusa). Each leaf is rendered in a distinct technique, creating a rich interplay of textures and materials: two leaves in mother-of-pearl with gold hiramaki-e veins, three in gold lacquer, one adorned with kirigane flakes, one in pewter, and one in black lacquer. The reverse continues this theme with three additional leaves. Also on the reverse, a Chinese poem is elegantly inscribed: 有真盡法 何&#-26521;我&#-29013; 知義作民 勇何争人 [If there is a true and perfect law, why should I care about myself? If I know how to be a righteous, why should I have the courage to compete with others?].The interior of nashiji and with gold fundame rims.LENGTH 6.5 cm, HEIGHT 7.7 cmCondition: Very good condition with only very minor typical wear.Auction comparison:Compare a related wood inro with similarly executed leaves, by Shibata Zeshin, dated to c. 1877, at Bonhams, Polish and Poise: Japanese Art across the Centuries, 12 May 2022, London, lot 80 (sold for GBP 22,950).13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
