拍品描述
AN UNUSUAL WOOD NETSUKE OF MONKEYSUnsignedJapan, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Cleverly carved as four monkeys with two heads: one pair seated and the others kneeling on all fours; one covering its mouth with its hands and the other cradling its right ear, the gestures reminiscent of those of the sambiki saru (the Three Wise Monkeys); with a large ringed himotoshi through the center.LENGTH 4.3 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor wear.Provenance: Ex-collection Sir John Gladstone, 3rd Baronet, (1852-1926), acquired on a visit to Japan in c. 1890. Christie’s, Fasque: The Scottish Seat of the Gladstones, 7 May 2008, London, lot 102 (sold for GBP 875 or approx. EUR 1,900 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). A private collection, acquired from the above. Woolley & Wallis, Japanese Works of Art, 16 November 2023, Salisbury, lot 835. A private collection, acquired from the above. The model for this netsuke is probably the Chinese 'sixi tongzhi' twin boys. The children are often represented in a similar entwined position, which represents the principle of ancient Chinese cosmology known as liangyi sheng sixiang, in which two primary forces (yin and yang) generate four images.
