拍品描述
A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF "THE CLAM'S DREAM"UnsignedJapan, first half of the 19th century, Edo period (1615–1868)A finely carved wood netsuke depicting The Clam’s Dream. The clam is shown open to reveal an intricately detailed interior: the undersea palace of the Dragon King, Ryujin, enveloped in swirling clouds. A dramatic scene unfolds within—the dragon gives chase to Tamatori Hime, the legendary pearl diver, who has stolen Ryujin’s sacred jewel. The palace includes a cleverly executed movable section. The underside is neatly finished with two generously excavated himotoshi.LENGTH 4.8 cmCondition: Good condition with minor wear, light traces of use, and age cracks.Traditionally, The Clam’s Dream motif features the fabled island of Horai with Ryujin’s palace. However, this example uniquely captures the enraged dragon chasing Tamatori Hime as she escapes with the stolen jewel.Tamatori Hime is a legendary ama (female pearl diver), often portrayed bare-breasted and armed with a small knife. According to folklore, she dove to the ocean’s depths to retrieve the jewel from Ryujin. To evade capture, she hid the gem by cutting into her own body, signaling her husband to pull her to the surface. She revealed the jewel’s location with her dying breath.
