A WOOD ‘DOUBLE MASK’ NETSUKE OF KINTARO AND YAMAUBAUnsignedJapan, Edo (Tokyo), mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)One side carved with a mask of the golden boy Kintaro, the face with a pronounced nose, two pierced eyes and a subtle smile below prominent cheeks, framed by delicately engraved hair. The reverse with a mask of Yamauba, with a cheerful expression, mouth agape in a laugh, pierced mirthful eyes, and parted hair secured by a double-band. Good himotoshi from the side through the center.HEIGHT 3.2 cmCondition: Excellent condition with minor surface wear.Kintaro (English: Golden Boy) is a hero from Japanese folklore. According to legend, he was raised by a mountain witch, Yamauba, and possessed supernatural strength. Kintaro is a popular figure in Bunraku and Kabuki dramas.
