拍品描述
A WOOD MASK NETSUKE OF OKAMEUnsignedJapan, Edo period (1615-1868)Finely carved as the Goddess of Mirth with a cheerful expression, exaggeratedly chubby cheeks, mouth agape in a laugh, pierced eyes, and a broad nose with flaring nostrils. The back with a thick central bar housing the himotoshi.HEIGHT 4 cmCondition: Good condition with old wear and natural imperfections including age cracks.Okame (or Otafuku) represents a lovely, always smiling Japanese woman who brings happiness and good fortune to any man she marries. She is also known as the Goddess of Mirth and is a very popular image in Japanese culture. Otafuku literally means ‘much good fortune’, and Okame means ‘tortoise’, which is also an auspicious symbol of longevity, as tortoises lead long lives.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related boxwood mask netsuke of Okame, unsigned, illustrated in Bushell, Raymond (1985), Netsuke Masks, pl. 141.
