拍品描述
DEME JOMAN: A WOOD MASK NETSUKE OF OTAFUKUBy Deme Joman, signed Deme Joman 出目上満 and Tenkaichi 天下一Japan, Edo (Tokyo), 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Finely carved as the goddess of mirth with a cheerful expression, the mouth agape in a laugh revealing the tongue and teeth within, with mirthful eyes, a broad nose, and plump cheeks. The back with a thick central bar housing the himotoshi and signed DEME JOMAN Tenkaichi [Deme Joman, first under heaven].HEIGHT 4.6 cmCondition: Very good condition with wear and natural imperfections including age cracks.Okame (or Otafuku) represents a lovely, always smiling Japanese woman who brings happiness and good fortune to any man she marries. She is also known as the Goddess of Mirth and is a very popular image in Japanese culture. Otafuku literally means ‘much good fortune’, and Okame means ‘tortoise’, which is also an auspicious symbol of longevity, as tortoises lead long lives. The Deme family was a famous family of mask carvers from the 10th century onwards. Ueda Reikichi states that Deme Eiman (died in 1705) was the originator of the mask netsuke. Deme Joman was a younger brother of Deme Juman, who was the son of Deme Eiman.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related wood mask netsuke of Otafuku, signed Gyokuseki, illustrated in Bushell, Raymond (1985), Netsuke Masks, pl. 247.
