A WOOD MASK NETSUKE OF A DEMONJapan, Tokyo, Meiji period (1868-1912)Expressively carved as a devious creature with its mouth opened wide, baring its splintered, plywood-like teeth. The demon has pierced eyes with blue-glass ringed pupils below furrowed brows, the tuft at the top of the head coiled into stylized horns, flanked by well-carved pointed ears which appear almost like horns.. Natural himotoshi. The signature plaque is incised with a signature reading ‘Deme’, however was likely previously inlaid with a signature plaque reading ‘Gyokuzan’ (see Museum comparison).HEIGHT 4.9 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor wear. The signature plaque lost.Museum comparison:For a closely related wood netsuke of a devil mask with wide-open mouth, by Gyokuzan, 19th century, 5.6 cm high, see the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 10.211.2381.
