MASATSUGU: A FINE NAGOYA SCHOOL WOOD NETSUKE OF A SLEEPING SHOJOBy Masatsugu, signed Masatsugu 正次 Japan, Nagoya, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Finely carved depicting a Shojo in a deep slumber after drinking a hefty amount of sake. Its head is resting on its upturned hand, nestled inside the robe, the expression conveying fatigue from all the drinking very well. The knees are bent towards the body, and the robe is carved with minute detail showing brocade and cloud patterns. One of the distinctive attributes is the Shojo’s full long hair, which was crimson and said to contain a much sought-after dye. Here it is delicately carved, flowing down the back and all the way to the underside.
