SUKESADA: AN ITTOBORI WOOD NETSUKE OF A BIRDBy Tsuda Sukesada (1857-1920), signed Sukesada 亮&#-29538;Japan, Takayama, Hida Province, late 19th to early 20th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)A charming ichii wood (Japanese yew tree) carving of a bird with inlaid eyes, its head swiveled to one side as it turns, one wing slightly open as it prepares to fly, executed in ittobori style (carved with a single knife or cutting edge). Two typically small himotoshi to the underside and signed SUKESADA.LENGTH 5 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor wear and light traces of use.Provenance: From a noted private collection in Munich.The composition is reminiscent of the early 20th century cubism art movement pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, who were heavily influenced by Japanese art.
