OUCHI GYOKUSO: A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A PAIR OF CHESTNUTSBy Ouchi Gyokuso (1879-1944), signed Gyokuso 玉&#-31237; Japan, Tokyo, early 20th centuryNaturalistically carved as two chestnuts forming a compact composition, the larger one gently splitting open at the tip, the surfaces of both finely stained, with subtly indented grooves, and with ukibori to the coarse area that was attached to the cupule. Himotoshi formed by the bar connecting the two chestnuts and housing the signature GYOKUSO.LENGTH 3.7 cmCondition: Excellent condition with minor wear.Ouchi Gyokuso (1879-1944) was the father of Ouchi Sosui (1911-1966) and together with Morita Soko (1879-1942) the most important pupil of Miyazaki Joso (1835-1910), the founder of the important So school in Tokyo.Auction comparison:Compare a closely related wood netsuke of chestnuts, by Ouchi Gyokuso, 20th century, at Bonhams, The Bluette H.
