SOYO: A FINE YOKOYA SCHOOL ANTLER AND SHIBUICHI KAGAMIBUTA WITH A SHISHIBy Soyo Yokoya, signed Soyo 宗&#-32249; with kakihanJapan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Of circular form, the stag-antler bowl fitted with a shibuichi plate finely carved in katakiribori and kebori to depict a reclined shishi, the face with a mischievous expression framed a bushy mane. The reverse of the plate inscribed SOYO with kakihan. A central himotoshi through the bowl, the cord attachment to the back of the plate.DIAMETER 4.2 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor wear and material inherent irregularities.Provenance: From a US private collection. The bowl and platelet each lacquered with a museum inventory number ’83.0084’.There are four Soyo Yokoya listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 1782-1783 (H08951.0 to H08954.0). The second son of Somin, Soyo Yokoya (H08953.0) became the third master of the Yokoya school and specialized in katakiri carving on shibuichi plates.Literature comparison:Compare a related shakudo kagamibuta with a shishi, by Soyo, illustrated in The International Netsuke Society Journal (INSJ) vol. 7, no. 3, p. 17, fig. 31.
