? DONRIN: A LARGE AND AMUSING ANTLER KISERUZUTSU (PIPE CASE) OF A GROOM AND HORSEBy Donrin, signed Donrin sakuJapan, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Published: Sydney Moss Ltd. (2016) Kokusai The Genius: and Stag-antler Carving in Japan, vol. I, pp. 162-163, no. 37.Of otoshi-zutsu type, cleverly carved from a branch of antler, the surface rendered in relief with a horse and a groom in an attempt to clean its hoof, the horse’s head raised in displeasure, and it’s tail whisking the man’s face, all below a towering pine tree, the natural surface of the antler cleverly incorporated to simulate the gnarled trunk, beside the partly concealed inscription Kofu tsune ni hizume o arau. Signed to the lower section DONRIN saku [made by Donrin] and with an inset antler loop suspending a metal ring himotoshi. With a fine bamboo and brass kiseru (pipe).LENGTH 26.7 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor wear, an old fill to the rim, the kiseru with old wear and traces of use.Provenance: June Schuerch Collection, Santa Barbara, California. The poetic title can be translated as ‘Those (horses=gentleman) of noble spirit always have their hooves cleaned (lit. the noble wind always washes the horse’s hooves)’. This subject sometimes depict the preparation of for the Shinto Horse Presentation Ceremony (Aouma no sechie) at the imperial court or the Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto. Here the wind in the pines denotes the thrust of the theme. The subject matter is seen in a well-known woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, dated 1804, in the Smart Museum of Art, The University of Chicago, object number 2015.1003.In Japan it was thought that the hooves are directly connected to the heart and if they got infected, the horse might die. Thus, grooms were solicitous at all times of cleanliness and health concerning hooves.13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
