A FINE INLAID SINGLE-CASE LACQUER INRO WITH DRAGONFLIESUnsignedJapan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Of horizontal rectangular shape, bearing a lustrous brown lacquer ground, decorated with gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. The design masterfully depicts dragonflies on each side, their wings and heads finely inlaid with aogai (mother-of-pearl). The interior cases of nashiji and red lacquer with gold fundame rims.HEIGHT 4.3 cm, LENGTH 7.7 cmCondition: With a loss to the mother-of-pearl inlay and to one cord hole. Otherwise, good condition with typical age-related wear. Provenance: Ex-collection Maurice Feuillet (1873-1968) (with an old label to the inside). Sold at his Sale, 23 – 24 June 1938, Paris, lot 84 (with an old label affixed to the upper side). Thierry de Maigret, Archeologie, Arts Asiatiques, Cannes, 11 December 2015, lot 174.
