A FINE CORAL-INLAID FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO WITH LEAFY VINES AND BERRIESUnsignedJapan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Of small upright form, bearing a roiro ground, embellished with e-nashiji and finely decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. The design depicts leafy vines trailing down from the top case to both sides, with coral-inlaid berries. These vines are set against a manji pattern, inlaid with minute kirigane sheets, which also adorns the risers, though here this design is executed in hiramaki-e. The interior cases of nashiji with gold fundame rims.LENGTH 4.3 cm, HEIGHT 7.1 cmCondition: Good condition with typical losses to the kirigane inlays as well as a tiny nick to the edge of the third case. Otherwise, typical traces of use and minor age-related wear.Provenance: Ex-Collection Charles Edouard Havilland. Tessier-Sarrou, Arts d’Asie, 16 June 2014, Paris, lot 127. Charles Edward Haviland (1822–1888) was a prominent French porcelain manufacturer and collector known for his contributions to the Haviland & Co. porcelain company. He was instrumental in expanding the family business, which was renowned for producing fine porcelain that achieved international acclaim. In addition to his work as a porcelain manufacturer, Haviland was an avid art collector, with a particular focus on Japanese lacquer art and porcelain.
