Description

An attractive pair of Japanese Kakiemon type models of tigers, Edo Period (19th century), seated on their hind quarters, decorated in yellow and black enamels with iron-red details and turquoise eyes, on raised tree stump bases glazed in iron-red, 26.5cm high (2) Compare with a similar pair sold Christies London, Japanese Art and Design, 2012, lot 243 Related examples can be seen in China Summer Palace, Drottningholm, belonging to the King of Sweden, illustrated in Soame Jenyns, R, Kakiemon Wares, pl. 10a: TOCS vol. 15, 1937-1938. Two pairs are also illustrated in Nihon Toji Taikei, vol. 20, Kakiemon, pl. 87, and in Porcelain for Palaces, The Fashion for Japan in Europe (1650-1750), pl. 168. Another tiger is illustrated by Hideo Kurita, Imari, (Kurita Museum, 1975), pl. 8. Kurita suggests that these were first made by special order of the Dutch East India Company which exported it to Western Europe during the Kanbun period (1661-1672).
